Understanding Slut Shaming & Sexual Liberation

What Is Slut Shaming?
An unfortunate phenomenon in which people degrade or mock women Becca’s she enjoys having sex, has sex a lot or may even just be rumoured to participate in sexual activity. Often it’s accompanied by urban legends such as the common virgin misconception that the vagina becomes larger or looser with use-in fact, sex has no effect on vaginal size – Urban Dictionary Definition
I understand where it all came from and to some degree understood why some people engaged in slut shaming. Now with a bit more knowledge and a strong “minding my business” attitude I now do not see why leaving women alone is such a big ask. Sex is something that is so subjective and personal to that individual and yet we have a created a way to limit the sexual activity of a woman to help rate who is worthy of respect. We have made someone else’s personal choices our own issues when really it’s none of our business what a woman chooses to do with their bodies. I say we because I have done it and still have moments when I catch myself not practising what I preach, I am not perfect and I am still unlearning what was once a normal attitude.
Reclaiming Ownership of Our Bodies
It’s funny because girls get teased for being prude but also abused and bullied for being sexual so I don’t understand slut shaming in that sense. It is literally a matter of control and a lack of ownership of our own bodies. Being sexual doesn’t make you less of anything, it’s simply a natural activity that people take part in for pleasure and to reproduce.
Calling out slut shamers and misogynists is a must, we are rewriting our stories and reclaiming ownership of our bodies. No longer worrying about what someone thinks of them based on their sexual activity. Our bodies are our own, we live our lives for ourselves and not for anyone else, this is the attitude that everyone should have, it isn’t limited to women.

Slut Shaming & Rape Culture

Slut shaming encourages rape culture, the whole “asking for it” excuse makes me feel sick. From a young age we as girls are taught to act a certain way or bad things will happen and it will then be our fault. However are we teaching the same things to men/boys? Nope. We are not teaching men to be accountable for their own actions.

Teach your daughters to be Individuals and teach them to be comfortable in their own skin. Then teach your sons to respect women and treat them the same way they’d want someone to treat them, Just be a decent human being that’s all.

Sexual Freedom/Liberation

I think a huge misconception about the discussion of slut shaming is the irrational fear that some people have, some believe it encourages girls to be hyper sexual. Reclaiming ownership of our bodies is all about choice, the freedom to make our own choices. The choice to be celibate or to engage in casual sex. Liberation does not mean, nor encourage following the crowd, it is all about freedom of choice, the choice to do what is right for you without being shamed or abused for it.

Practise safe and consensual sex, if you’re not harming anyone or yourself what’s the issue? My body is my body and what I decide to do with it is up to me.
